Can I get Life Insurance Without a Medical Exam?

There’s a disconnect between insurance companies and potential customers that don’t want to undergo a medical exam to obtain even a minimal amount of life insurance. Many insurance companies assume that individuals are trying to hide something, when the individual may just have a fear of needles, certain tests, or even doctors.

Others may feel uncomfortable with certain examinations. The good news is that there are ways to get life insurance without enduring a battery of tests and a physical exam that individuals may feel are overly invasive.

Exam-free life insurance is most often recommended for the elderly, those that aren’t seeking very large policies, or individuals that don’t want excessive waiting periods for a full payout if they die. People can obtain no-exam insurance in the form of term life, whole life, and “burial” insurance policies.

No-Medical Exam Term Life Insurance

This type of policy will ask you the same medical-related questions as those that require a medical exam. The insurer will want to evaluate your medical records and history, including past surgeries, injuries, any diagnosis, and medications being taken.

Policies may be written for terms of 10, 15, 20, or 30 years, in amounts ranging from $100,000 to $1 million. You may also have the option to convert it to a whole life policy and the policies are typically far less expensive than whole life. The policy has no financial value until the policy holder dies.

No-Medical Exam Whole Life Insurance

These policies are more expensive. If your health is failing or there’s a very urgent need for life insurance, these policies may fit your requirements. It will grow interest over time, but you’ll find that the costs are considerably more than term life insurance policies.

No-Medical Exam Final Expense Life Insurance

You may also want to explore this type of insurance, also known as burial insurance. It’s fairly affordable and typically covers the cost of funeral and burial costs. It’s a good alternative if your health, age or finances prevents you from buying a traditional policy. The cost of coverage can encompass amounts ranging from $5,000-$50,000 and is an alternative if you don’t qualify for life insurance through traditional policies.

Precautions

Don’t assume you’re automatically going to qualify for coverage under any of the plans. Insurers can still deny you coverage if they feel you’re a substantial risk due to health concerns. If you’re seeking life insurance as a precaution due to the COVID-19 pandemic, be aware that insurance companies have a list of exclusions and conditions they won’t cover – even if you have coverage. Death due to COVID-19 isn’t covered.
