Why Pet Insurance Is So Worth It

Our four-legged friends are part of the family and making sure that they are in good health is important to us all. Purchasing pet insurance is a great way to ensure that your companion has access to excellent health care should they become old and ill, or even worse, be injured as the result of an accident.

Over adventurous cats and mischievous dogs are prone to chasing cars or becoming stuck in places they shouldn’t be.  Even the most minor of injuries can lead to expensive vet bills and medicines, but dedicated pet insurance helps to cover the cost of medical care should the worst happen.

Why You Need Pet Insurance in Florida

High temperatures, sunny weather, toxic wildlife and dangerous predators can present serious and unique health risks to your cat or dog here in the Sunshine State.  Being able to access veterinary care quickly means that your pet has a higher chance of recovery.

Here in Florida, the average vet bill is more than $1,000 per vet visit.  This means that if you have an adventurous or accident-prone pet, you could be looking at spending upwards of $15,000 over the course of their lifetime.  Yikes!

Coverage for All Eventualities

It’s not just accidents and injuries that pet insurance covers, it can also help to cover the cost for animals who have longer-term health issues. Comprehensive pet coverage should include coverage for a variety of potential expenses, including:

  • Hereditary, Congenital, & Chronic Conditions
  • Diagnostic Tests
  • Emergency Care
  • Hospitalization
  • Specialist Care
  • Prescription Medication
  • Surgery

It can also cover preventative measures that can keep your beloved pet in good health for many years to come, including:

  • Annual Exams
  • Spay / Neuter
  • Teeth Cleanings
  • Blood Panels, Urinalysis
  • Heartworm Tests, Fecal Tests
  • Rabies, DHLP, Parvo Vaccination
  • Bordetella, Lyme Giardia Vaccination
  • Flea, Tick & Heartworm Treatment
  • Microchip
  • Deworming
  • Nail Trimming

Depending on your provider, your pet insurance may also cover allergy testing, medication for chronic conditions and even allergy shots

Find the Right Coverage for Your Best Friend

When you are looking to purchase pet insurance for your best friend, there are several variations of cover you could consider.

Comprehensive Medical Coverage – these are the most popular of plans that cover all types of treatment and medication, except for routine care and pre-existing conditions.

Wellness Coverage – You can add a wellness plan to your regular pet insurance covered to help cover the cost of preventative medications, depending on the individual needs of your family pet.

Accident Only Coverage – These plans are designed to protect against the cost of veterinary care in the event of an accident.  They cost less than comprehensive coverage, but they offer very limited coverage.

Different types of plans will also offer different levels of coverage.  Before you sign up for a pet insurance product, make sure you know exactly what you are entitled to. After all, the whole point of insuring your pet is to ensure full access to medical treatment, regardless of the expense,

There are four different benefit or pay-out limits and they are broken down in order of preference:

  1.  Unlimited Lifetime:   After you pay your deductible, there is no upper limit the pet insurance policy will pay to cover your pet’s medical bills.
  2.  Annual Maximum:  There will be an annual cap on how much your pet is covered for. Anything above that will be paid out of pocket.
  3.  Annual per Incident:   This is the maximum dollar amount the company will pay for a particular illness, condition, or procedure in a given year.
  4.  Lifetime Maximum:   This is the maximum amount the company will pay out either in total or per condition for the lifetime of your pet.
