Accident Insurance vs. Disability Insurance

With so many different types of insurance available, it’s often difficult to differentiate one from another. One of the primary considerations for most individuals is what happens if they’re in an accident or injured. Choosing between accident insurance and disability insurance are both options and individuals can opt to purchase either type or both to best meet their specific needs.

Accident insurance will give policy holders a lump sum cash benefit to help them meet costs associated with any covered injury. It can help people pay for their co-pays and deductibles when they receive treatment, along with any other associated costs for which they’re responsible.

Disability insurance will replace a portion of the policy holder’s wages should they become unable to work due to an injury. There are two types of disability insurance, short-term and long-term. Unless specified, disability insurance is typically associated with an injury but not an illness. Short-term disability is usually 13-26 weeks in duration.

The two types of insurance are complimentary and can work together. An example would be if an individual broke a leg. Those with both types of policies could receive a one-time cash payment through accident insurance. If the injury prevented the policy holder from working for a time, they could also make a claim for short-term disability benefits that would cover a portion, but not all, of their regular wages.

No one can predict when and accident or injury will occur. There are precautions that individuals can take to protect themselves financially in the form of accident and/or disability insurance to help them weather one of the most difficult and stressful times in their life.

Individuals can receive benefits from both types and one won’t affect the other. However, much of what is covered will depend on the exact terms of the policy and it’s always best for individuals to confirm all the details with their insurance agent.
