Can a Security System get you a Discount on Home Insurance?

A home security system not only gives you peace of mind, it can also save you up to 20 percent on your homeowner’s insurance, depending upon your insurer. The amount of the discount will depend largely on if the system is monitored or unmonitored.

Insurance companies like home security systems since it reduces the potential for a break-in, thereby lowering the number of claims they have to pay. According to the FBI, a home is broken into every 15 seconds and that number is rising. It’s important for insurance companies that your system is professionally installed. The following are some things to keep in mind when choosing a security system for your home.

Unmonitored System

This type of security system is less expensive than a monitored system. They’re a cost-effective way to provide an extra level of safety. The systems are compatible with your smartphone, providing you with the ability to monitor it remotely.

A professionally installed system will typically include sensors for doors and windows, motion sensors, smoke detectors, sirens, and glass-break sensors, along with a control panel. Some companies also include smart doorbells.

The disadvantage of an unmonitored system is that even if a break-in occurs, you’ll have to call the police and wait for them to arrive. If you’re on a plane or other location with sketchy or no internet access, you won’t be able to notify law enforcement.

Monitored Systems

A monitored system is scrutinized 24/7 by a professional home security company. You’ll pay a monthly fee for the service and the advantage is that you don’t have to do anything. In the event of an attempted break-in or other type of situation, the security service can notify its own security detail, the police, fire department, and emergency responders. It will depend on the company and its service agreement.

When you contract with a company for your security needs, the equipment can encompass sensors for glass breaking, doors and windows. It may also include smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, motion sensors, indoor and outdoor cameras, window stickers, and yard sign. An “ultimate” package may include lighting control, thermostat control, and electronic locks. This all adds up to savings for you on your homeowner’s insurance.
