Individuals are familiar with home, life, auto and business insurance, but there’s a whole other realm of things for which people desire protection. Niche insurance policies are becoming more popular and insurance companies have been quick to comply. Whether real or imagined, the following are just some of the strange things for which people have requested an insurance policy.
Niche Insurance Policies
Many individuals are seriously concerned about extra-terrestrials and alien abduction. One British company has sold over 30,000 policies for alien abduction and the first company in the U.S. to sell the insurance was the St. Lawrence Agency in Altamonte Springs, FL.
All types of celebrities have had body parts insured, sometimes for billions. The following are just a few: Kim Kardashian’s derrière, Mariah Carey’s legs, Madonna’s breasts, Julia Robert’s smile, Bruce Springsteen’s voice, Miley Cyrus’s tongue, and Tom Jones’ chest hair.
Also known as “change of heart insurance,” it reimburses a third party for wedding costs if the bride or groom call off the nuptials – providing it’s called off a year in advance.

The policies provide insurance to fans in the event that one of their players is injured.
There are policies protecting people against permanent disability caused by a ghost and other supernatural activities. Similar policies have been issued against being turned into a werewolf or vampire.
Loch Ness Monster
Lloyds of London underwrote a policy for a $2.4 million policy for anyone that caught “Nessie.” In the following years, swimmers have been insured against the monster’s bite and a cruise line is insured against an attack.
In the UK, this covers employers against the cost of replacing staff if a group of co-workers wins the lottery.
The good news is that homeowner’s and business insurance provide protection for policy holders from space debris that includes asteroids, meteors and satellites.
