Why Everyone Should Consider Flood Insurance

People that live away from coastal areas often feel safe from flooding due to hurricanes. It’s a false sense of security. Storm surges have been known to travel 25 miles inland. That doesn’t account for flooding that occurs from torrential downpours that accompany the tropical storms.

Many insurance companies no longer issue flood damage policies and individuals will need to obtain coverage through the National Flood Insurance Program(NFIP) offered through FEMA. It’s particularly important for those on the coast and low-lying areas. That can include a significant area. The highest point in Florida is Britton Hill at 345 ft. above sea level. The natural feature also represents the lowest high point in the entire U.S.

Flooding is the most common natural disaster in the nation, even outpacing tornadoes. It’s also the most expensive, which is why many Florida insurers are no longer offering that coverage. FEMA policies also reimburse policy holders even if a disaster declaration hasn’t been made.

The standard homeowner’s insurance policy doesn’t cover flood damage. An increasing number of insurers that do offer flood insurance are including stipulations that the water can’t touch the ground first for damage to be covered.

Even homeowners that haven’t been affected by flooding in the past are now experiencing damage due to an increase in storms and their severity as a result of climate change. Another factor affecting these homes are poorly planned building projects that don’t adequately address runoff from ordinary rainstorms.

A flood insurance policy is different than a homeowner’s policy that protects against damage due to a broken pipe or leaky water heater. Flooding can happen anytime and anywhere. A flood insurance policy provides home and business owners with essential protection from flooding due to hurricanes, storms and a variety of other flooding events. NFPI coverage from FEMA is the best option for flood insurance in Florida and something everyone should consider.
