Celebrate the New Year Safely

The beginning of a new year is a few days aways and there are multiple ways to celebrate in South Florida. Many will enjoy festivities at their favorite nightclub or take their boat for a night cruise to watch fireworks. Unfortunately, the vast majority of events involve alcoholic beverages and that can land you in trouble with the local law. You can enjoy New Year’s Eve festivities while remaining safe.

Don’t Over Imbibe

You may drink more than you intended without realizing it. Keep track of what you’re drinking, how many you’ve consumed, and be sure to eat something to help mitigate the effects of the alcohol.

Take a Rideshare

Leave the car, golf cart or recreational vehicle at home. Call a rideshare to take you to and from your destination so you won’t be tempted to drink and drive.

Children and Pets

It doesn’t matter if you’re celebrating at home or engaging in a family activity, it’s imperative that you know where the children are at all times. Youngsters can easily become lost in the sheer number of merry-makers out and about on New Year’s Eve. Make sure children aren’t sampling any alcoholic drinks. If you opt to attend a party elsewhere, hire a sitter and pay them well.

If hosting a party in your home, place pets in a quiet room away from merry-makers. Some pets become over stimulated and the risk of a biting incident is high. Keeping pets in a quiet space with the door closed will prevent them from fleeing the noise. Consult your veterinarian about a potential tranquilizer for highly anxious and nervous pets.

At Risk Hours

There are some hours when you’ll be at greater risk than others. Try to avoid driving between 8 p.m.-2 a.m.

Pedestrians Beware

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are the deadliest for pedestrians. If you do walk, stay to main roads and walk in a group whenever possible. Don’t forget to charge your phone and have it on you at all times.

Social Media

Don’t post on social media about your activities or when you’ll be gone. Doing so is an open invitation to burglars and vandals. You could easily return home to find you’ve been robbed of all the new gifts and gadget you got for Christmas.
