What Does Aviation Insurance Cover

An aircraft is a major investment and one that needs to be protected. Florida doesn’t mandate insurance for non-commercial aircraft, but there are some very good reasons for owners to obtain coverage. There are 6 important aspects of aircraft coverage anyone with a personal plane or helicopter should consider.

Public Liability

There are many things that can go wrong with an aircraft, as evidenced by the recent spate of emergency landings on highways. Public liability insures owners for any damage their craft may cause to homes, other aircraft, airport facilities, cars and crops. However, it doesn’t cover damage to the aircraft or injuries to passengers. Due to the nature of damage that can occur, policies are typically written in amounts of $1 million or $5 million.

Passenger Liability

This insurance component is very straight forward. It provides coverage if a passenger is injured or killed.

Combined Single Limit

Also known as CSL coverage, it’s a single solution that combines public and passenger liability. The insurance usually contains a monetary limit per accident. It provides the insurance company with more flexibility in paying claims, especially if little damage is incurred on the ground, but passengers are injured.

In-Flight

This protects the plane or helicopter against damage while it’s actually in the air.

Ground Risk, Not in Motion

There are multiple types of damage that can befall an aircraft at rest on the ground. Coverage may take the form of Blue Book value or a pre-agreed amount. The insurance covers fire, theft and vandalism, along with wind, flood and hail damage. It also protects against mudslides, hangar collapse, animal-related damage and uninsured vehicles that may strike the aircraft.

Hangar Insurance

Whether you own a hangar or rent space in one, hangar insurance protects the aircraft against damage while its being stored.
