If Your Car is Stolen

Sometimes a stolen vehicle is simply a crime of opportunity. If your car does go missing, immediately report it to the police as stolen. Doing so will be essential for the insurance company when you file a claim. If you have a locator app, try finding the vehicle and let the police know if you’re successful. Never attempt recovery on your own.

Check with anyone nearby who may have been a witness to the theft.

It’s also a good idea to check with impound lots. Sometimes accidents happen and your vehicle may have been towed by mistake. You may also want to alert your finance or lease company. If the police locate your car and it’s taken to an impound lot, have an insurance adjuster inspect it before you take it from the lot as parts may have been stolen or other damage done to it.

Prevention is Preferable

Even if your car isn’t on the list of the most frequently stolen vehicles, theft can still occur. The more safety measures you can take to prevent theft before it occurs, the less likely your vehicle will become a statistic. Your insurance company may also offer discounts on insurance premiums for the precautions.
