The Best Fishing Spots in The Florida Keys

Florida isn’t all about great beaches, fantastic scenery and world-class entertainment (although all of those things are pretty cool), it is also home to some of the very best fishing spots anywhere in the world.

Known to many as the “Fishing capital of the world” Florida is surrounded by deep warm waters, that are home to some of the most beautiful fish you will ever see.  The year-round warm weather means that every day is just perfect for getting your rod and reel and hitting the water.

Florida Bay, edged by the “inner” curve of the Keys and the Florida mainland, is referred to home to some of the most sought-after game fish in the world, including bonefish, tarpon, permit, redfish (red drum) and snook.  If you are looking to cast your net here in the sunshine state, here are some of the very best resorts fish from right here in the Florida Keys.

Islamorada

This unique village of six small islands is one of the premier saltwater fishing destinations on the planet.  A trip to Islamorada promises epic catches every time and is believed to be where backcountry and saltwater fly fishing were first pioneered.  These days, fishermen come from all around the world to catch legendary bonefish, tarpon, sailfish, and various snappers.

Marathon

Located at the heart of the Florida Keys, Marathon is one of the region’s most historic areas and one that is popular with fishermen of all ages and abilities.  Enjoy some fun fishing as you fish the reefs and the wrecks for yellowtail, mangrove, and mutton snapper, grouper, mackerel, and barracuda, or head out on a boat to explore the open waters of the gulf side bay to find everything from dolphinfish to barracuda to blue and white marlin.

Big Pine Key

Big Pine Key is the perfect spot for those who like to snorkel and dive their way across the waters.  Here in the lower keys, the calm waters also offer an excellent opportunity for less experienced fishermen to hone their skills.  Swordfish, yellowtail and mangrove snappers all swim in Big Pine’s waters, so you will never be far from a big catch here.

Key West

Undoubtedly the most famous of all the Florida Keys, this former home of Hemingway is a beautiful place to enjoy the areas abundant sea life.  Skilled fishermen love to come here to really test their metal, as they take challenging excursions out into the water to catch tuna, tarpon, and other local game fish.

Home to an array of imagination-inspiring shipwrecks, the former living place of Ernest Hemingway, and perhaps the most famous island of the Florida Keys, Key West boasts no shortage of bragging rights. Missing from this list is the area’s abundant sea life, a feature which makes the island a popular pick amongst skilled fishers. For a challenging excursion (and a great story), you can’t beat the tuna, tarpon, and other local game fish found in Key West.

Key Largo

The longest of all the islands, and the gateway to the Keys, this is also a very well-known fishing spot here in the Florida Keys.  Home to as many as 600 different species of indigenous fish, there is fishing for everyone here.  Anglers of all abilities can cast out and catch tarpon, bonefish, permit and much more here on this picture-perfect key location.
