Pet Insurance Savings

Pets are part of your family and pet insurance can sound like a very good way to combat the high cost of pet care. Before you decide to take out a policy on your pet, you should know that pet insurance doesn’t work like insurance for humans.

You’ll have monthly premiums and a deductible that must be met before insurance coverage begins that can range from $100 to $1,000. Some insurers offer deductible amounts as low as $50 and a limited number have a $0 deductible. The higher the deductible, the lower monthly premiums will be.

Most insurers offer coverage that resets at the beginning of each new plan year, which means you’ll have to meet the deductible all over again. Dogs are more expensive to insure than cats, and premiums will increase as your pet ages. Policies usually only cover a single pet, but a few innovative insurers offer policies that will cover multiple pets under the same policy.

Wellness Care

The policies reimburse you for preventative and routine care, typically have a zero deductible, and is usually only available as a rider, not a stand-alone policy. It will typically cover vaccinations, medications such as flea and tick treatment, wellness exams, and it may also cover microchip implants.

Accident Only

The premiums are lower, but you’ll have to pay the full cost for illnesses, medications and routine care. The coverage only covers accidents and doesn’t pay the veterinarian directly. You pay the bill and the insurance company will reimburse you.

Accident and Illness

This covers injuries from accidents and vet-diagnosed disease and sickness. Optional coverage for wellness visits may be offered for a separate fee. Premiums will be higher, won’t cover teeth cleaning or routine care, and reimbursements are capped per accident or illness.

Full Coverage

Complete coverage options are available, but the cost of monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs can be significant. Policies may include reimbursement for costs associated with surgery, chronic conditions, behavioral issues, and alternative therapies. Be sure to seek coverage that includes hereditary and congenital conditions, as those may only manifest later in life.
