How to Insure Your Jewelry

It doesn’t matter whether you have one valuable piece of jewelry or 100, you need to insure it against loss, damage, fire and theft. The cost to insure jewelry is relatively inexpensive, usually 1 to 2 percent of the value for each piece. A homeowner’s policy will cover jewelry, but for high-value items you’ll need more.

It’s not just diamond engagement rings that need protection. It includes your pearl jewelry, antique or vintage pieces, and watches, along with bracelets and earrings. However, there are some things that you’ll have to do to obtain insurance on any of those pieces.

One solution is to add what’s known as a “rider” or “floater” to your homeowner’s policy, but many insurers exclude jewelry or limit the amount of coverage per item. You may need to find an insurer that specializes in high-end assets and purchase a stand-alone policy.

Photos

Before you even discuss insuring your jewelry with an insurance company, document them by taking photos of each item. Take images from every angle to ensure you capture all details. Be sure to store all the photos of your jewelry to the cloud or on a thumb drive and keep the drive in a safe place.

Receipts

Keep all receipts related to your jewelry. It’s a good idea to take photos of the receipts and keep them with your images of the jewelry.

Appraisal

Have all your jewelry appraised by a professional that specializes in the type of jewelry you’ll be insuring. You’ll need to take photos of the official appraisal document, keep them with the receipts and photos you have, and store the original appraisal documents in a safe place.

What it Doesn’t Cover

Jewelry insurance won’t cover any pre-existing damage or normal wear and tear. Intentional damage that’s caused, or damage due to pests also isn’t covered. It’s essential that you insure your high-value jewelry against all potential problems – you’ll rest easier for doing so.
