Will a Flood Policy Cover Mold?

An insurance policy that covers flood damage will typically cover mold and mildew that’s a result of a flooding event. Much will depend on the policy. However, many homeowners’ policies no longer provide coverage for flooding in Florida.

An increasing number of insurers in the state are refusing to cover flood-related damage. Thousands of clients have found themselves dropped by their insurance company if they’re considered to be in a high-risk area. Other insurance companies have stopped providing certain types of coverage or left the state entirely. The companies have indicated that flood damage is too expensive to cover any longer. A single inch of water can result in $25,000 in damage.

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) operated through FEMA is where many Florida renters and owners of homes and businesses obtain flood insurance. To obtain coverage through NFIP, individuals can simply talk to their regular home or auto insurance agent.

The bad news is that the program doesn’t include coverage for damage due to mold and mildew. The program’s administrators recommend that individuals begin cleanup activities as soon as possible to help prevent mold growth. The problem with mold is that in warm and damp conditions, it can begin to grow in as little as 24 hours.

Flood insurance is something that needs to be in place before its needed. Anyone requiring an NFIP policy should know there’s typically a waiting period of 30 days from the time the policy is purchased to the time it begins covering flood-related damage.

Mold is an element within the natural environment. It’s a particular problem after a flooding event and many individuals choose to engage the services of a professional remediation company to address the problem. The experts have the tools, techniques and equipment to dry out the premises and eliminate mold. Mold sinks roots down into building materials. The professionals eradicate mold at the roots.
