Recreational Vehicle

Do You Need a Special License to Drive an RV?

You have a wealth of recreational vehicles (RVs) from which to choose to explore the Florida landscape. The term RV typically brings to mind a camper or similar vehicle, but there are on-road and off-road RVs. They include ATVs, off-road motorcycles (OHMs), recreational off-highway vehicles (ROVs), golf carts, and low-speed vehicles (LSVs).

AVTs

You won’t need a special license or a driver’s license to operate an ATV on public roads. Anyone younger than 16 will need a certificate from an approved OHV safety course.to ride in designated ATV areas and public parks. They must be supervised by an adult at all times.

Golf Carts

You won’t need a driver’s license to operate a golf cart, but drivers must be a minimum of 14 years of age to operate one. Golf carts can only be operated on roads with a posted speed limit of 30 mph and drivers must adhere to all local and state traffic laws.

LSVs

A low-speed vehicle must be registered, titled and insured according to the State’s personal injury protection (PIP) and property damage liability (PDL) laws. A valid driver’s license is required and the vehicles can only be operated on roads with a posted speed limit of 35 mph or less. They travel at greater than 20 mph but not more than 25 mph.

OHMs

Anyone riding an OHM needs a valid driver’s license and a motorcycle endorsement. The motorcycle must also be titled and licensed. You must carry a minimum of $10,000 in PIP coverage. A helmet isn’t required to operate a motorcycle, but eye protection is a requirement.

ROVs

The vehicle is defined as any off-highway recreational vehicle that’s 80 inches wide or less, with a dry weight of 3,500 lbs. or less. It travels on 4 or more tires and is designed exclusively for recreational use. Go-carts are included in this designation.
